Käthe Kollwitz

Käthe Kollwitz, born in Königsberg in 1867, is probably the most important German artist of the 20th century. Contrary to fashionable trends, she mainly takes on social and personal themes and processes them graphically, graphically or later also plastically. However, she is known and appreciated worldwide above all for her graphic work. The content of Kollwitz' works are interwoven with the poor quarter in northern Berlin, where the artist lived and worked together with her husband, the doctor Karl Kollwitz from 1891 until the bombing of her studio in 1944. It is Kollwitz's interest to depict the unadorned reality of people's lives in their immediate surroundings. In 1919 she was the first woman ever to be admitted to the Prussian Academy.
