We are delighted to be taking part in this year’s DC Open Gallery Weekend, which will take place from 4 to 6 September in Düsseldorf and Cologne. The day before, on Thursday 3 September at 6 pm, we will be opening an exhibition at our premises on the first floor, dedicated to the two artist couples Bernd & Hilla Becher and Brigitte & Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff.
On display are two artistic approaches within German post-war art that engage in different ways with structure, form and serial arrangements. Bernd & Hilla Becher have shaped international photography since the 1960s with their photographic typologies of industrial buildings. In parallel, Brigitte & Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff developed a sculptural language characterised by tension, movement and spatial construction. The juxtaposition of the works reveals formal and conceptual parallels. The photographs by Hilla and Bernd Becher follow a clear systematic approach and examine industrial architecture within serial contexts. The sculptures by Brigitte and Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff explore balance, densification and the relationship between form and space. Both pairs of artists are united by their close collaboration spanning many decades, as well as their interest in constructive processes and the effect of form in space. The exhibition brings these positions into direct dialogue and opens up new perspectives on the relationship between photography and sculpture.
