Charlotte Berend-Corinth - wife of Lovis Corinth, mother of his two children, muse and model - was a painter herself and began taking lessons at Lovis Corinth's painting school in 1901. Our works reveal the nature of Charlotte Corinth and the master Lovis Corinth in two different ways. As early as 1924, Georg Biermann wrote in his book that the artist would never have become a great painter if he had not first been a gifted draughtsman.1) As can be seen in our pencil drawing, the model is depicted in just a few lines and hatchings. In half profile from the side, Charlotte is captured in outlined contours. Even without colours, the drawing has a painterly effect and the few deliberately clear lines create a monumental quality.
Charlotte Corinth herself is depicted in the act of drawing. Gracefully and unobtrusively, a pencil can also be recognised in her right hand, which she is guiding across a sheet of paper. The artist honoured Charlotte as more than just his lover. In numerous drawings and over 80 paintings, he also presents her as a mother as well as an artist.
