Biography

1881

Alexander Kanoldt is born in Karlsruhe on 29 September as the second child of the painter Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt (1845–1904) and Sophie Kanoldt, née Hellwig (1853–1919)

1899

Enters the Grand Ducal School of Arts and Crafts in Baden

1901 and 1902

Two trips to Italy with his father

1904–1906

Kanoldt continues his art studies in Friedrich Fehr's painting class and remains his master student until 1909

1908

Comes into contact with the circle of artists around Alexej Jawlensky and Wassily Kandinsky

1909

Moves from Karlsruhe to Munich; founds the "Neue Künstlervereinigung München" and the group's first exhibition at Heinrich Thannhauser's gallery

1914–1918

The outbreak of the First World War interrupts his artistic career; takes part in the First World War in France, Italy and Ukraine

1918

Undertakes an extended trip to Italy

1921

Intensively studies lithography for the first time after his time at the Academy

1925

Becomes a professor at the State Academy in Wroclaw

1931

Opens a private painting school in Garmisch-Patenkirchen

1932

Returns to Munich and becomes a member of the artists' group "Die Sieben" (The Seven)

1933

Receives the Albrecht Dürer Prize

1939

Alexander Kanoldt dies on 24 January as a result of heart disease
