Born on 20 April in Barcelona, Spain

1907–1910

Completed a commercial apprenticeship whilst attending the School of Industrial and Fine Arts in Barcelona

1912–1915

Studied at Francesc Galí’s art school in Barcelona

1913

Joined the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc in Barcelona

1919

Met Pablo Picasso in Paris

1920

Commuted between Mont-roig and Paris, taking part in the activities of the Dada movement

1921

First solo exhibition in Paris at the Galerie La Licorne

1924

Joined the Surrealist group

1926

Collaborated with Max Ernst to design stage sets and costumes for the ballet Romeo and Juliet

1929

Married Pilar Juncosa; subsequently moved to Paris

1936–1940

Lived with his family in Paris; the Spanish Civil War influenced his work

1958

Awarded the Guggenheim International Award

1980

Awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Arts in Spain

1983

Died on 25 December in Palma de Mallorca
