Biography

1931

Tom Wesselmann is born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

1953

His studies in psychology are interrupted for two years as he is called up for military service during the Korean War. During this time, he begins to draw cartoons.

1959

Wesselmann turns to Pop Art.

1960s

The artist achieves international breakthrough.

1967

Participates in the Biennial in São Paulo.

1968 and 1977

Participates in the Documenta in Kassel.

1980s

Tom Wesselmann begins to create coloured aluminium cut-outs, which mark a new stage in his artistic development.

1993

Wesselmann focusses mainly on the abstract style.

2004

Tom Wesselmann dies in New York at the age of 73 following a heart operation.
