Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Lesser Ury - the painting style of Berlin artist Christopher Lehmpfuhl is in the tradition of these German Impressionists. Like his famous colleagues, he also paints works, often landscapes or cityscapes, en plein air - in the open air - and in this way establishes a direct connection with his surroundings. Painting trips, which always offer Lehmpfuhl new, light-flooded motifs for his virtuoso, impasto, often large-format works of art, are always an important part of the creative process for him. Watercolour is a lesser-known medium, but one that Lehmpfuhl executes just as skilfully. A particular attraction of this technique for the artist is the precision required, as it is virtually impossible to correct a brushstroke once it has been made in this medium.
Back in March 2020, we published a small catalogue that focused exclusively on Lehmpfuhl's watercolour works, including private views of his studio. We are now delighted to present four new, light-flooded watercolours on the following pages. Landscapes and cityscapes created en plein air transport us into the pleasant atmosphere and lightness of a Tuscan summer evening by means of radiant points of light, glowing colours and long shadows.
