Thomas Demand

1964, Munichlives and works in Berlin

Thomas Demand's photographs question the possibility of a collective pictorial memory through the play of conceptual alienation. The works of the trained sculptor represent reconstructed scenes taken from public media, such as press photographs.Using simple materials such as paper or cardboard as models in a 1:1 ratio, he recreates these scenes in detail and then destroys them again. Like a crime scene, only the final photographs of the models bear witness to their existence, while at the same time creating a moment of confusion, to what extent images can actually still be remembered in our contemporary memory. Since 2011, he has been Professor for Sculpture at Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg.
