The portrait is one of the first commissioned works that the painter, who had been based in Stockholm since the end of 1937, executed in the southern Swedish province of Skåne. In the background of the painting, you can see Gustav Adolfs Torg in Malmö. In Norway and Sweden, Gerd is a female first name and refers to Gerda, a figure from Norse mythology.
