The legendary Armory Show (1913) acted as a platform for cultural transfer by presenting many protagonists of the European avantgarde movements. By doing so it changed the understanding of modern art in America. In the following decades many European artists promoted their art in the US, such as the Blue Four (Feininger, Kandinsky, Jawlensky & Klee).
A decade later others fled Europe to live, teach and work there, amongst them Albers, Beckmann, Ernst, Feininger and Grosz who changed the course of the American artworld.

After WW2 and with the 2nd Documenta in 1959 in Kassel the Abstract Expressionism of American artists became known in Europe. It stirred sensation among European artists who embraced non-figurative ways to get away from all political narratives. Hartung and Götz are perfect examples of how Europe now looked towards what was happening in the US. In 1962 Gerhard Richter and others reacted to Pop Art with their ironic “Capitalist Realism”. In 1968 Warhol's first solo exhibition at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm was shown and in 1969 Richter was on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NY. There are many more examples of this very fruitful exchange between Europe and the US, e.g., the Bechers regular exhibitions at Sonnabend in NY or Pienes taking over the first fellowship at the MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies.
At our booth 347, we would like to celebrate the wonderful results of cultural exchange within the oeuvre of 20th century masters.
